The Curriculum

At Osmotherley Preschool, we are committed to providing a nurturing environment where children thrive through a carefully designed curriculum that blends learning and play. Our curriculum is inspired by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and is tailored to the needs of each child supporting their development through the most important years of their life.
Our curriculum is forever changing as the children move onto their next steps,  encouraging school readiness

What are the EYFS areas of learning

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

  • Emotional Literacy: We help children recognize and manage their emotions through activities that encourage self-expression and empathy.

  • Social Skills: Through group activities and play, children learn to communicate effectively, share, and collaborate with their peers.

Communication and Language Development

  • Speech and Language: We foster language development through storytelling, conversations, and activities that promote vocabulary expansion and listening skills.

  • Early Literacy: Children are introduced to letters, sounds, and basic reading concepts in a playful and engaging way, laying the foundation for literacy skills.

Physical Development

  • Gross Motor Skills: Outdoor play and structured activities enhance children’s coordination, balance, and physical fitness.

  • Fine Motor Skills: Activities such as arts and crafts, using scissors, and manipulating small objects strengthen fine motor skills necessary for writing and daily tasks.

Mathematics

  • Number Awareness: Children explore numbers through counting games, sorting activities, and everyday experiences to build a strong mathematical foundation.

  • Shape and Space: We introduce basic geometry and spatial awareness through puzzles, building blocks, and creative play.

Understanding the World

  • Nature and Environment: Children learn about the world around them through exploring nature, observing changes in seasons, and engaging in simple science experiments.

  • Cultural Awareness: We celebrate diversity and introduce children to different cultures, traditions, and festivals to promote understanding and respect.

Expressive Arts and Design

  • Creativity: Through art, music, drama, and imaginative play, children express themselves creatively and develop confidence in their abilities.

  • Sensory Exploration: Activities involving textures, colours, and sensory materials stimulate creativity and sensory awareness.
